Carbon Action Initiative

In 2021 we participated in the Climate Action Initiative “Know Your Number!” workshops provided by Wao and supported by QLDC, Destination Queenstown and Lake Wānaka Tourism.

This program was designed to enable local businesses with the knowledge and tools to calculate their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and take action to reduce them.

The carbon footprint is an estimate of the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions released by our business activities over a year and it’s expressed as carbon dioxide equivalent. This will provide a baseline for managing, measuring and reducing our emissions.

The estimation of our total emissions from 1st of January to 31st December 2021 was 3.34 tCO2e.

This estimation includes only the activities defined by Chunky within our boundary. For the complexity in data collection, we didn’t include the embodied emissions in our products. To see the full report please click here.

We found that our greatest emissions were Indirect Emissions, being “Domestic Road Freight” 31.83% of our total emissions, followed by “Staff commute (petrol)” (25.17%) and “Domestic Flights” from staff to trade fairs in Auckland (23.76%).

As we return to “business as usual” we expect to see an increase in the 2022 Carbon Footprint due to business activities increasing and travel back to normal, as we did experience the impact of Covid-19 like every other small business.

We are looking forward to making some improvements now that we know our priority areas to work on.
